Hair Removal Option No. 3: Electrolysis

What It Does:

This system delivers tiny shocks of electricity to the hair follicle killing the cells that make hair using an ultra-slim needle to penetrate each hair shaft. No hair will grow there again as once a cell is gone; it’s gone.

How Long It Takes:

If you want a lot of hair removed, it could take up to a year of weekly treatments as each electrolysis treatment is relatively short from 10 to 20 minutes. Take a glance at the thickness of your fur and then you will have an idea of how long the commitment it will require since each hair is treated one at a time.

Best For :

Small areas are often a good place to start such as brows and neck while electrolysis works for hair removal equally well on all areas because of the time-consuming nature of the treatment. Though many men find treatment in the genital area to be very painful, a local anaesthetic can help if used for genital hair removal.

Cost:

Per treatment about $40

Lasting Result: Permanent

Expert Comments:

Patsy Kirby, president of the American Electrolysis Association in Bodega Bay, Calif, is of the opinion that the most common electrolysis treatment for young men is the unibrow, whereas many become concerned with the excess in the area around the collar and ears and around the nose as men get older.

Whereas not discouraging men from going for larger areas of clearing is she saying that as your time goes on with the electrologist, the length of treatments usually shortens. Subsequent treatments may take just 5 to 10 minutes so it’s a long-term commitment but it's not time-consuming while the first treatment may take 20 to 30 minutes.

Hair Removal Option No. 4: Back Shavers

What It Does:

These specialty straight razors allow you to shave your back and shoulder in much the way you use a back scrub brush during a shower with blades that are wide as an inch and a half and with hinged handles coming to be a foot-long

Best For:

On the back, shoulders, or buttocks, and any area. Whereas not recommended since a cut in this region could have serious complications when it comes to shaving the genital area is possible.

How Long It Takes:

Between 20 minutes to an hour

Cost:

Along with blades and shaving creams, under $40.

Lasting Result:

At most, a few days

Expert Comments:

Reminding us that it can increase the risk of ingrown hairs that occur when cut hairs curl back into the skin instead of growing outward, is dermatologist Bruce Katz, MD, says while shaving is fast as easy. Those who are more likely to develop infections caused by the ingrown hairs, this can be a particular problem for African-American men. You might want to try back shaving in the shower, to help avoid problems, Katz says to make sure that the hair you will be shaving is wet. To make hair removal easier, he also recommends shaving in the direction the hair grows and lathering up beforehand. Shaving does not cause hair to grow back thicker or coarser contrary to popular opinion.

Hair Removal Option No. 5: Depilatories/cream hair removers

What It Does:

Attacking the proteins in hair and dissolving them is a chemical compound suspended in a gel or cream base. Instantly this causes the hair to loosen and fall out.

Best For:

Areas including back, chest, arms, and legs. For this hair removal treatment, the skin around the brow and the genitals may be too sensitive.

How Long It Takes:

Though the compounds sit on the skin for about 5 minutes, it takes just 30 to 60 minutes.

Cost:

With a home kit, $10- $20; for a salon treatment, $25-$50.

Lasting Result:

Probably a week to several weeks

Expert Comments:

Janet Fairley, MD, professor of dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, says particularly on sensitive genital skin, there are some chemicals used in depilatories that can be extremely harsh. She further suggests doing a patch test always on a small area of skin. Wipe it off immediately and don’t use it in case you have any type of reaction including burning, redness, blisters, or itching. You may want to try a different brand before giving up on this method since every formulation is slightly different.

The Conclusion

These tips help men get rid of unwanted body hair. So, relax and keep in mind, that hair removal treatments are not just for women.
