Here Is What You Always Wanted To Know About Psoriasis – Part 1

What Is Psoriasis?

Causing skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal is psoriasis, a skin disorder. Building up into bumpy red patches covered with white scales in the skin. Most of them appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back even though they can grow anywhere. The condition of psoriasis cannot be passed from person to person. In members of the same family, it does sometimes happen.

In early adulthood, psoriasis usually appears. It affects just a few areas for most people. Psoriasis can cover large parts of the body in severe cases. Throughout a person’s life, the patches can heal and then come back.

Symptoms

Depending on the type you have, the symptoms of psoriasis vary.

Including the following are some of the common symptoms for plaque psoriasis which is the most common variety of the condition:

Often covered with silver coloured scales are plaques of red skin. As they sometimes crack and bleed, the plaques may be itchy and painful.

The plaques will grow and merge covering large areas in severe cases.

Including discoloration and pitting of the nails, disorders of the fingernails and toenails are found. It is also found that nails thereby crumble or detach from the nail bed.

On the scalp, plaques of scales or crust are formed.

A type of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis is also found in people with psoriasis. In the joints, it causes pain and swelling. Between 10% to 30% of people with psoriasis also have psoriatic arthritis as the National Psoriasis Foundation estimates.

Types

The following include other types of psoriasis:

Causing red and scaly skin with tiny pustules on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet is pustular psoriasis.

Often starting in childhood or young adulthood, causing small red spots mainly on the torso and limbs is Guttate psoriasis. It is often triggered by respiratory infections of the conditions like strep throat, tonsilitis, stress, injury to the skin as also taking antimalarial and beta-blocker medications.

Making bright red, shiny lesions that appear in the skin folds like the armpits, groin, as also under the breast is inverse psoriasis.

Causing fiery redness of the skin and shedding of scales in sheets is erythrodermic psoriasis. Severe sunburn, infections, certain medications, and stopping some kinds of psoriasis treatment comes to trigger this. As it can lead to severe illness, it needs to be treated immediately.

What Causes Psoriasis?

Experts believe that it’s a combination of things as no one knows the exact cause of psoriasis. Triggering new skin cells to form too quickly, something wrong with the immune system causes inflammation. Skin cells are replaced every 10 to 30 days normally. New cells grow every 3 to 4 days with psoriasis. Creating those silver scales is the buildup of old cells being replaced by new ones.

It may skip generations whereas psoriasis tends to run in families. A grandfather and his grandson may be affected whereas not the child’s mother for instance.

Including the following are the things that can trigger an outbreak of psoriasis:

Cuts, scrapes, or surgery

Emotional stress

Strep infections

Medications, including

Beta-blockers like blood pressure medication

Antimalarial medication including Hydroxychloroquine

Why Go For Treatment?

Though there is no definite cure for psoriasis, they can be kept in check and controlled using chemicals including steroids. People with the condition should take care of the skin as it is too sensitive. There is more to be done when treating a person with psoriasis. Often, they need the care of a dermatologist more than that of an amateur. So always keep in mind not to go for DIY tips or the over-the-counter medications. Strictly stick to the advice of a doctor as there are many types of psoriasis and it needs to be treated with the help of a certified expert.
