Figure Out Your Curly Hair Type — And Here Is The Reason Why It Matters- Part 2

The Continuation

Here we list the remaining types of curls and its haircare processes and products.

Type 3: Curly Hair

TYPE 3 CURLS

3A: Soft Curl

3B: Curly

3C: Ultra Curly

Including hair that curls into springs and corkscrew shapes in this category of curly hair. Curls usually look like waves when the hair is wet but they take on a three-dimensional swirl shape as they dry. In this hair type, each strand can be unique. Therefore, it is necessary to look for products specially formulated for curls and to prevent frizz. Combining wavy and coily strands, this type is the one most likely to involve different hair types like fine, medium, or thick.

3A

In the curl type of 3A, you can find stretched spirals of curls that are large in diameter rolling down from the crown with large soft curls making the hair usually not coarse to touch with bouncy springs full of life even when minimally styled.

Known as some of the easiest types of curls to manage, 3A along with the right products has not even required much styling. To help control strands when styling and drying, look for light styling creams. To coat curls and to add shine, try featherlight Garnier Whole Blends Oat Delicacy Gentle Detangling Hair Milk.

It is easily straightened by a flat iron or a blow-dry brush preparing to add a little elbow grease getting your desired look with the Drybar The Double Shot Blow-Dryer Brush that is proven to add volume while creating a smooth blowout

3B

With well-defined medium size springs resembling corkscrews comes the Type 3B. As the spirals create fullness by bouncing off each other there is no need to boost volume for this curl type as also they are vulnerable to breakage and frizz. Playing a role in curl health is how you dry your hair as celebrity hairstylist Nikki Nelms styling Solange’s and Zoe Kravitz’s hair recommends drying with a cotton t-shirt as the regular cotton towels come to be too rough causing damage, dulling hair.

To keep the frizz away and give shine, hair oils and serums may be all that is needed and it keeps 3B curls look lush. Here effectively blocking frizz on hair samples is GoldwellKerasilk Control Rich Protective Oil that isn’t greasy as testers confirmed.

3C

With springs that are smaller and more tightly packed than 3B as they can vary from precisely defined to loose helixes comes the Type 3C hair and caring for the curls bring the following: it is important to thereby work a detangling comb from tip to root instead of root to tip like most of the people do to help reduce damage as Nelms advises. Using gentle shampoos like the cleansing conditioners can keep these curls full and soft as it clean and nourish simultaneously with higher ratios of conditioning ingredients.

Here you can try Joico Moisture Co-Wash Whipped Cleansing Conditioner as hair gels can help keep the curls of this type in place providing frizz protection. It is therefore found that to enhance the naturally curly texture, this is what we recommend that alcohol-free Dove Amplified Textures Shine and Moisture Finishing Gel made with softening jojoba and coconut oils.

Type 4: Coily/Kinky Hair

TYPE 4 CURLS

4A: Coiled

4B: Zig-Zag

4C: Tightly Coiled

Coming with either a compact zigzag pattern as it doesn’t twist around itself or tightly-wound s-shaped curls is the Type 4 hair. Incorporating the two shapes, the Type 4 shrink when dried, and to determine if it is your curl pattern, you can give it a closer look as the hair is wet and dried.

4A

Type 4A curl can be recognised by the small but distinctively S-shaped strands sequenced into looped tight rings. Use shampoos and conditioners that are rich with moisturising agents to minimise any damage and gently pat hair dry without excessive rubbing. Providing the highest level of conditioning in the test of moisturising formulas is the Herbal Essences Bio Renew Hydrate Coconut Milk Shampoo.

Benefitting from additional nourishment from hair creams is this type of hair keeping ringlets plush to the touch and protected from moisture.

4B

Characterised by the tiny zigzagged pattern is the Type 4B often accompanied by compressed and s-shaped coils. In this type of hair, it lends itself to a range of different styles that it can tolerate a variety of products from gentle to rich as the advice of Nelms comes with conditioning the curl is key both in the shower and post-shower. It is good to clean and quench your curls with gentle shampoos and conditioners such as Alaffia’s Everyday Coconut shampoo as well as the EveryDay Coconut conditioner as both are crafted with virgin coconut oil and no artificial colours or synthetic fragrances.

Being the most vulnerable when wet, hair with 4Bcurls should be made sure that the hair is well conditioned before styling. Here we recommend trying a rich leave-in conditioner which has to be applied on the damp or dry hair that is similar to Pattern Leave-In Conditioner created for coily and tightly textured strands which are packed with nourishing botanical oils.

4C

Tightly coiled strands of Type 4C is more fragile than any other pattern and has a very tight zig-zag shape as it is sometimes indiscernible to the eye. Most prone to breakage this hair type needs constant moisturisation. Remember to nourish your hair with deep conditioners and hot oil treatments at least once per week for reducing scalp and hair dryness on hair with textured strands and following with coconut, castor or almond oil similar to lightweight Mielle Organic Mint Almond oil locking in moisture on strands and has a slight tingling sensation when applied to the scalp as it can also be used as a hot oil treatment.

Detangle and separate your hair with your fingers when applying hair oils ensuring the products are evenly distributed as Nelms recommends sleeping on a silk pillowcase or wearing a hair bonnet for further protection. She further explains that it helps hair retain hydration for healthier curls.
