13 Tips for having long and healthy hair

Are you one among those people who wish to have really long hair? Read on. Here are some tips which will surely help you in this regard.

  1. To begin with, have patience.

Whether you like it or not, long hair never happens overnight. According to the well-known hairstylist Mark Townsend, who assisted Ashley Olsen to grow her hair really long, human hair only grows one fourth to half an inch every month. That too, if you have really healthy hair. Therefore, in order to grow your hair really long first you should show patience and wait for it to grow.

  1. Trim your hair more often.

This may seem a bit ironic at first. How will trimming your hair increase its growth? It is because trimming will prevent the formation of split ends. On the other hand, if you allow split ends to grow you will have to cut a lot more hair at the end which could have been saved by proper trimming. Townsend suggests trimming your hair about at least an eighth of an inch every 10-12 weeks.

  1. Shampooing should always be accompanied by conditioning.

According to Townsend, wet hair must be conditioned at all times because conditioner helps to seal the hair cuticle and helps to replace proteins and lipids inside the hair shaft.

  1. Don’t shampoo your hair each time you shower.

It is a common practice to skip using conditioner while showering. This is not the right thing to do if you are planning to grow your hair long. Instead, skip regular shampooing. This is because shampoos are just cleaning agents and are basically used to wash away dirt from hair. This means shampoos may also take away essential natural oils that keep our hair healthy. In order to avoid this practice applying shampoo only occasionally and that too on the scalp and let the running water do the hair cleaning job.

  1. Finish each shower with a cold water rinse.

The healthiest way to clean your hair is to use cold water to rinse it thoroughly. This ensures that the hair moisture is not lost and it also prevents hair damage and snags.

  1. Go for an oil or mask treatment on a weekly basis.

If you have hair beyond your shoulders, one thing is for sure. These hairs must be several years old and it requires something more than simple conditioning. Here is a secret recipe for this. One cup of unrefined coconut oil can be used in combination with one tablespoon each of macadamia, almond and jojoba oils for this purpose. It is recommended that this mixture should be applied to damp hair and left for approximately ten minutes before applying shampoo and conditioner as always.

  1. Try hair-boosting supplements if needed.

Keep in mind that for creating new healthy hair our body requires many vital nutrients. Therefore, if needed, you can make use of hair-boosting supplements which will provide your hair with ample nutrients and essential minerals. In addition to this, always make sure to have a healthy balanced diet. Townsend recommends the use of Viviscal Extra Strength and Biotin tablets for this purpose. Make sure to consult with your doctor before taking any type of hair-boosting supplements to make sure that they are taken in the correct dosage and they don’t interact with any of the medications you are already taking.

  1. Brush your hair with utmost care.

Be aware of the fact that improper brushing does more harm than good to your hair. It is recommended that while brushing instead of starting from the scalp, always start from the bottom end of the hair. This will make detangling of your hair easier because this method will prevent small tangles from being accumulated to large knots at the bottom end. Townsend recommends the use of Sheila Stotts Natural Boar Bristle brush for brushing your hair as it helps to spread natural hair oils on to your scalp. Not only that, these brushes are observed to be extra gentle on hair strands too.

  1. Avoid using a cotton pillowcase.

Keep in mind that cotton pillowcases usually impart more friction to your hair causing your hair to get tangled easily. In order to avoid this Townsend suggests using satin or silk pillowcases instead.

  1. Don’t use massive towels to wrap your hair.

It is a very less known fact that wrapping your hair with ordinary bath towels causes hair breakage. This is because hair gets caught in between the woven fibers of the towel. This can be avoided if you use a super-thin microfiber towel like Aquis microfiber hair towel.

  1. Change your pony placement frequently

This is a simple thing to do for protecting your hair from breaking of constant pressure in them caused by a fixed positioned ponytail. In order to avoid this frequent change in your ponytail position is advised.

  1. Don’t tie your hair at all if you have dry, bleached or fragile hair.

You should go for a ponytail hairstyle only if you have strong hair. Otherwise, your hair may break off if you regularly tie it up tightly using a rubber band. Instead, gently twist your hair into a bun and clip it if you prefer to keep it off your neck.

  1. Don’t use too much of hot tools.

Always try to make minimal use of hot tools such as hair straighteners, chemical relaxers or any other treatment or hairstyle which tend to damage
